Hi, I’m here with Richard Barrett and we will talk about the Brazilian cultural development barriers. I’m Wagner Cassimiro and this is the Espresso3.

Richard, what are the main barriers that we need to overcome to improve our national culture?

It’s the same in many nations. There are three things that people want more than anything else. They need to be able to survive, so they need employment. They need to feel safe, that’s fundamentally important. And they need to feel secure in the environment where they are. So, survival, safety and security are the basics of life and so, unless you got those sorted out, you’re going to have a sense of unease in the population. You’re going to have what I call Cultural Entropy, it’s the degree of disfunction in the nation because people’s basic needs are not being met. And so that’s fundamental.

Once you got those in place, so people can find work, they feel safe in their environment and they feel secure about their future, then they will grow and they will develop, and they will start looking for other things in life. They’ll start looking for meaning and purpose and they’ll want to make the difference. But if you don’t get first those three things in place, that won’t happen. And that’s the issue in Brazil right now. The issues are around survival – that’s economic policy and business environment – and safety – in many of the favelas, where there are more than the 50% of the population live, it is not safe -, and because of that they don’t feel secure. So, safety, and employment are fundamental. And there’s one other thing that came out recently which was demonstrated by the Zica epidemic, if I may say that. People began to realize that they needed good health care. So the top of the list of what Brazilian people want right now are: good health care, they want to feel safe in their environment and they want employment. These are the three big things coming out of our survey of the Brazilian people.

So, what’s happened in the last seven years in Brazil… We’ve mapped the values in brazil in 2010 and again in 2017 and what has changed is the level of cultural entropy, that’s the degree of dissatisfaction that people have with the culture, has gone up. It’s gone about almost 10%. Things are worst now than they were seven years ago. In every aspect. And so we are getting to a critical point in Brazil, something has to happen to start to deal with these three key issues that I’ve mentioned earlier.

So Brazilian people want to have these three things. They want to feel that they have an employment, where they can get enough money to look after their families; they want to feel safe and secure in their homes; and they want to have hope for the future, they want to be able to build a future for their children. For most people that their main interest.

In your experience, do you know another country that has had this experience?

Well, actually there are many countries that have been through this experience! This is not new, I mean if you look into history we can see the same thing happen in many other countries. So many countries have been through this process and have come out to the other side. Brazil is one of the countries going through it, but you’re not alone. There are many other countries going through this process right now. So… there is hope for the future. But it requires courage, as we already mentioned. This is one of the most important personal values of the people of Brazil. It requires courage to face up to the issues and do something about it! And who needs to do something? You do! I do! Everybody needs to do something. They need to own the problem and be responsible and accountable for making a difference. Not wait for all the politicians to make different! Start with you, start today!

Ok, thank you!

E quem precisa fazer alguma coisa? Você precisa! Eu preciso! Todos precisam fazer alguma coisa. Eles precisam reconhecer o problema e serem responsáveis e encarregados por fazerem a diferença. Não esperar que todos os políticos mudem. Comece com você, comece hoje!

Ok, obrigado!
